From foam materials to outdoor gear

Sun Own Industrial Co., Ltd. started in 1975 making foam materials, and early on developed foam and water-sports products that were sold in more than 30 countries. It launched its own outdoor brand, 歐都納, in 1984 to design outdoor equipment suited to Taiwan's conditions.

Products and materials

Its products cover performance jackets and clothing, waterproof breathable hiking boots, backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, water-sports equipment, and mountaineering cookware, stoves and lamps. It also makes EVA, PE and TPE foam materials, and floats, surfboards, protective gear for sport and for military and police use, yoga rollers and exercise mats. From 1990 the company brought out a sleeping bag weighing 850 grams, Taiwan's first coloured tent, a thin jacket that packs into its own pocket, and a Gore-Tex jacket lighter than an apple.

Climbing programme and circular clothing

From 2006 to 2009 the company launched a programme to climb the highest peak on each of the seven continents, forming Taiwan's first systematically trained mountaineering team, which reached the summit of Everest (8,848 metres). The company says its equipment and insulated clothing were used at minus 58 degrees Celsius on Vinson Massif in Antarctica, and in the Karakoram, where day-to-night temperature swings approach 60 degrees. It also promotes the Leave No Trace approach to the mountains and has launched circular clothing with green supply-chain partners.
